Types of Labradoodles and their different labradoodle coats
A Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle (miniature or standard) the result is a smart and sociable dog who not only possesses the good-natured friendly companionship and intelligence of a Labrador but also has the low-shedding coat of a poodle. Labradoodles are one of the most popular dogs in the UK These affectionate dogs are often used as guide, therapy and assistance dogs. They are extremely loyal.
Labradoodles come in a range of sizes, colours and coats. They can be small, medium or large sized dogs
- Standard – height: 53.34 – 60.96 cm - weight 22.67 – 29.48 kg
- Medium – height: 43.18 – 50.80 cm - weight 13.60 – 18.14 kg
- Miniature – height: 35.56 – 40.64 cm - weight 7.25 – 11.33 kg
There are three main types of coats
- The straight hair coat, which is similar to fur in shedding breeds. This coat is often seen in first generations. It is very low maintenance but can be low to medium shedding.
- The second coat, is the Wool coat, it is dense and similar in feel to a lamb's wool. Wool coats hang in loose curls and aren't dense. Generally, the Wool is usually non-shedding but requires regular clipping.
- The last type is the Fleece coat which has a silky texture and is often described as feeling like angora. This coat ranges from straight to wavy.
Labradoodles are considered to be non- to low shedders, especially those with a Fleece or Wool coat. Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of coat
The Labradoodle's coat comes in a wide variety of colours such as, gold, apricot, caramel, chalk (a chalky white), black, red, café, cream, silver, chocolate, parchment, and blue. They can also have parti-colored coats, which consist of brindles, phantom, patched, or sable colors.
The terms used to describe the generational cross are F1, F2, F3 etc. A F1 is a first cross between a Labrador and a poodle. An F2 is a cross between two F1 Labradoodle's. An F3 is a cross between two F2 Labradoodle's. If a Labradoodle is mated back to a Labrador or Poodle than they are given a 'b' suffix i.e. a F1 Labradoodle mated to a Poodle would result in F1b puppies.
Both Amber and Belle are F1 Minature Labradoodles, this means that they are a first cross between a Labrador retriever and a miniature poodle. They both have straight low-shedding coats which do not require clipping.
Amber's puppies were a F1b minature Labradoodles. Amber an F1 Labradoodle was crossed with a minature Poodle. The puppies coats ranged from loose curls to tighter curls. All the puppies were low to non-shedding but required some clipping.
